The former First Lady got candid about living at the White House as well as raising her and Barack’s daughters. Here’s what she had to say!
While a guest on Conan O’Brien’s podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Michelle Obama opened up about her husband’s presidency.
She also gushed over their two kids – daughters Sasha, 17 and Malia, 20 – admitting she is in ‘awe’ of them.
‘We had to parent by creating this cocoon of normalcy in a pretty crazy, abnormal world. We spent eight years just going, ‘It’s OK! You’ll be fine, this is normal, just go to school. You have men with guns…hey, you know, you’re safe, don’t complain! You have food, so don’t complain to me.’’ Michelle told the host during the podcast interview.
She went on to add that ‘It was very much, keeping them in their reality. Making sure we went to the parent-teacher conferences, and that we went to the games and that we were sitting on the sidelines with them.’
The mother of two mentioned that it was really important for them to have lives as normal as possible and that included having sleepovers with their friends like any other kid out there.
Michelle explained that the daughters thought no child would want to come to the White House.
‘I was like, ‘You are wrong, my friend.’ But their view was, ‘I don’t want to be here, I’m here all the time. I want to go to X’s house.’’
The former First Lady explained that she thought it was a really ‘healthy’ attitude the girls had.
They developed ‘resilience,’ and she was ‘in awe’ at the way they managed to deal with life at the White House, with so much ‘poise and grace.’

According to her, Malia and Sasha would try to go out every day and live life like regular children their age.
