20 Celebrities Who Survived Horrific Accidents

It’s no secret that accidents are a part of life.  While many people are fortunate enough to live an entire life time without encountering any life threatening incidents, others have found themselves in the middle of situations that they were lucky to survive.  Even some of the world’s biggest stars have had to learn the hard way that money and fame cannot save them from some of life’s most horrendous moments.  However, despite the tragedy, all of these people have been very fortunate that they were able to live to see another day after almost losing it all as the result of an accident.  Here are 20 celebrities who survived horrific accidents.

Spike TV's Guys Choice - Arrivals

Halle Berry

Halle Berry has been in a few car accidents throughout her career.  From 1997 to 2007, she was involved in three car accidents.  However, the accident in 2000 caused the most physical injury to Berry, who was hit while driving her Chevy Blazer.  Berry suffered a concussion, and a cut on her forehead which required 20 stitches.

Erik Estrada

Former teen heart throb, Erik Estrada, was injured several times throughout his tenure on the popular 70s series, CHiPs.  His most serious injury came in the summer of 1979 when he was critically injured in a motorcycle accident while on set. As a result of the accident, Estrada suffered two broken wrists and several fractured ribs.  After being released from the hospital, Estrada’s injuries were later incorporated into the show’s storyline.

Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler has been involved in several serious accidents throughout his life.  However, In 2012, Butler was involved in a near fatal surfing accident while on the set of the film, Chasing Mavericks. Apparently, a large wave came and pulled Butler off of his board while shooting a scene.  According to Butler, “I’ve been in car accidents, I’ve been smashed on the edge of a roof — almost went over — I’ve been hit by a lot of stuff, almost lost my eye on my last movie — I was hit by a bullet casing. This was I think by far the most dangerous in my life, I think that was the closest I’ve come.”

Teddy Pendergrass

Throughout the 70s, Teddy Pendergrass was one of the smoothest R&B singers in the game. However, in 1982, Pendergrass was involved in a very serious car accident after he lost control of his car and hit a guard rail. The accident resulted in him being paralyzed from the chest down.

Gloria Estefan

In 1990, while traveling through Pennsylvania on her tour bus, internationally known singer, Gloria Estefan, was injured when a truck slammed into the back of the bus.  Estefan suffered broken vertebra which had to be fused together when she reached the hospital.  Estefan has since cited the accident as a life changing experience.

Chevy Chase

While shooting for the film “Modern Problems” in 1981, actor/comedian, Chevy Chase, was injured after an electrical problem caused the lights to short-circuit. Electric bolts went through Chase’s body and knocked him unconscious.

Tracy Morgan

In 2014, actor/comedian, Tracy Morgan, was severely injured in a car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike.  According to reports, a Walmart truck crashed into the car in which Morgan and his friends were riding, resulting in the death of Morgan’s friend and fellow comedian, James McNair.  Morgan suffered serious injuries, including what his lawyer says is a traumatic brain injury.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

On scree, Arnold Schwarzenegger is usually unstoppable; however, that is not the case in real life.  Schwarzenegger has been involved in several accidents throughout his life and career. In 2001, while riding a motorcycle with his son, a driver backed into the street and collided with the motorcycle.  Neither the driver nor Schwarzenegger’s son suffered any injuries; however, Schwarzenegger required stitches for injuries sustained on his face.

Gary Busey

In 1998, Gary Busey was involved in a near fatal motorcycle accident in California which resulted in him being throw from the bike onto the curb.  Busey, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, was rushed to the hospital with head trauma.  Since then, Busey has been suffering from the effects of the brain injury, which have impacted him more than originally thought.

Jim Caviezel

In 2004, while on the set of the film The Passion of the Christ, Jim Caviezel was struck by lighting while preparing for the Sermon on the Mount scene. According to Caviezel: “We were preparing to shoot the Sermon on the Mount and three seconds before, I was hit by lightning. I knew it was going to happen. People started screaming and they said I had fire on both sides of my head and a light around me.”

Stevie Wonder

In 1973, award-winning musician, Stevie Wonder, was almost killed after a car his was riding in struck the back of a flatbed truck.  Wonder, who was asleep at the time of the impact, was knocked unconscious and it is believed that he was struck by a log that came through the windshield.  After the accident, Wonder was in a coma for four days, and partially lost his sense of smell.

Niki Taylor

In 2001, while riding through Atlanta, GA, Niki Taylor was involved in a car accident after her then boyfriend lost control of the car while trying to answer his cell phone.  Taylor was rushed to the hospital where it was revealed that she’d suffered a collapsed lung, liver damage, and spinal injuries.  Taylor spent six weeks in a coma, would eventually undergo 56 operations.

Dennis Rodman

In 2010, Dennis Rodman miraculously survived after he was involved in an accident that resulted in his SUV flipping over.  According to reports, Rodman’s car flipped over three times after veering off of a highway in Florida.  Somehow, Rodman did not receive any injuries and stated: “‘I should be dead by now, but I’m still living. They can’t get rid of me just yet.”

George Lucas

Long before he was known as the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas was involved in a car accident that no one thought he would survive.  While driving home from high school, another car collided into the side of Lucas’ vehicle, sent his car flipping more than seven times.  According to Lucas: “I was hit, broadsided, by a car that was going about 90 miles per hour. I should be dead… It did give me this perspective on life that said, you know, basically, I’m operating on extra credit… Let’s just go for it. I’m never afraid of dying. I feel like what I’m getting is bonus material.”

Orlando Bloom is either extremely accident prone or has very bad luck.  Over the years has been involved in a slew of accidents, all resulting in painful injuries.  Bloom has broken a leg in a motorcycle accident, broken his right leg in a skiing accident, broken his right leg in a snowboarding accident, and broken his bike after falling from a roof.

More than a decade ago, rock star turned reality TV dad, Ozzy Osbourne, was involved in an ATV accident that almost cost him his life.  As a result of the incident, Osbourne broke several ribs, his collarbone, and a vertebra in his neck.  After the accident, Osbourne said that he believed he had been over prescribed pain medicine from his doctors, which resulted in an unhealthy dependency.

In 2008, Morgan Freeman fans everywhere held their breath after the star was involved in a near-fatal car accident.  After the vehicle, which veered off of the road, flipped over and landed in a ditch, Freeman and the other passenger had to be cut out of the mangled car.  Freeman was airlifted to the hospital and sustained a broken arm, broken elbow, and nerve damage.

Over the years, Harrison Ford has been very open about his love for flying. Unfortunately, just a few months ago, Ford severely injured after a plan he was flying mad a crash landing in  California.  However, despite his injuries, things would have been much worse if not for Ford’s incredible flying skills.

In 2008, Travis Barker, who has always been afraid of flying, was involved in a plane crash which claimed the lives of almost everyone else on board. According to Barker: “I opened a door, and my hands caught fire. I ran to get out of the plane, but I fell through a wing. I immediately soaked up with jet fuel and caught fire. And then I was on fire, running like hell. I was running for my family: I didn’t care about anything except being with my dad, my sister, Shanna, my three kids.”  Even years after the accident, Barker has admitted that he is still uneasy about flying.

Superman fans everywhere were shocked and saddened in the spring of 1995 when Christopher Reeve was thrown from a horse during riding competition that left him paralyzed.  For the rest of his life, Reeve was confined to a real chair and also had to use a ventilator to assist with his breathing.
